The photo at the top of this blog’s home page, an uncropped version of which appears above, is a view of Lake George from the porch of my family’s summer home in Huletts Landing, New York. Lake George is known as “the queen of American lakes.” It’s one of the loveliest places I’ve ever been.
This lake-front property was purchased by my father’s great-grandfather in the late 19th century and passed down. Many of the surrounding properties are thus owned by various cousins, which makes vacationing there like participating in a summer-long family reunion.
That rock face on the far side of the lake is known as Deer’s Leap, named for a native American legend about a hunter who chased a deer to the top of that cliff only to watch it leap off, land in the lake below, and escape with its life.
