Poll Closing Times and States to Watch

Posted on November 3, 2020November 7, 2020 by Paul Knight

If, like me, you’re going to be watching coverage of the election returns tonight, you might be interested in this link, which shows when the polls close in each state. It gives you an idea as to when during the evening you might hear substantive updates to the results.

One item that confused me at first: If you go to the above link, you’ll see Indiana and Kentucky listed as states where the polls close at 6:00pm, but it also seems to show that no electoral votes are at stake. What’s going on there is that the polls close in only parts of those states at 6:00pm. Polls close in the rest of those states an hour later, and of course it’s only after all of each state’s polls close that the question of how that state’s electoral votes will be allocated can be answered.

According to Steve Kornacki on MSNBC, there are five states that Trump won in 2016 which are make-or-break for him this year and are likely to provide returns sometime tonight: Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Georgia and Texas. If we learn that Trump has lost in any of those states, it’ll be pretty much game over.

Fingers crossed.
