I miss people. I’ve never been someone who travels in order to see a place. I usually travel to see a friend, or a couple of friends, who happen to live somewhere else . . . Over the last few years I’ve thought about going to see a friend in Brooklyn and a friend in Canada, but I didn’t get around to it. Now I’m kicking myself . . .

I thought about starting a blog for a long time. There was a whole range of considerations that stopped me, none of which have changed. What led me to finally start blogging was getting clear on what I would be blogging for . . .

I’m going to cheat today and post something I wrote before I started this blog: my father’s obituary. He died a bit more than a month ago. I have two friends who I consider to be exceptionally good writers. One of them, my wife’s brother-in-law Tom, wrote obituaries for both his parents (and even wrote an entire book about their lives together), so I asked him to send me his father’s obituary so I could use it as a model. (Thank you, Tom.) This was the result . . .

It’s been about 10 weeks since the Covid-19 pandemic closed down the option of doing much of anything that involves physically mingling with other people outside the home. As a retired man with no kids and no hobbies, that has distilled my daily life down to just a handful of activities . . . After a certain amount of soul-searching, I’ve decided to spend some time each day writing . . .
