A Man Called Ove

A Man Called Ove

Posted on July 25, 2020July 25, 2020 by Paul Knight

I watched this movie last week and was really taken by it. It’s in Swedish, and while I sometimes find watching a movie with subtitles off-putting, I didn’t have a problem with it in this case.

The protagonist, Ove, is a cranky, isolated retiree who spends his days enforcing the rules of his neighborhood association and visiting his wife’s grave. Shortly into the movie we discover that Ove has resolved to join his wife by taking his own life. New neighbors complicate his plans, primarily by calling on him for help. The movie is funny, moving, and bitter-sweet. I was surprised at how much I liked it.

I’m evidently not alone: its critics score on RottenTomotoes.com is 90% with an audience score of 87%.

I watched it on a DVD courtesy of my Netflix DVD subscription, but it’s also included with Amazon Prime Video, or you can rent it for streaming on either Amazon or Apple iTunes.
