I can only imagine what the shamans of old would have made of the fact that a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn is occurring on the date of the winter solstice. The two gods embrace for the first time in memory, and immediately the days start getting longer.
According to NASA, we’ll need to look to the southwestern sky about an hour after sunset this evening. Jupiter is the brighter of the two planets, and Saturn will appear slightly above and to the left of it. NASA says we should be able to watch as the planets appear to converge and then draw apart.

Unfortunately, the forecast where I live calls for cloudy skies this evening, so the only way I’ll be able to catch the show is to watch it on TV. Or I can wait until the next time it happens in November of 2040.
