I’m impressed with our township’s Recreation Department. Yesterday I wrote about how they’re encouraging residents to go out and ring bells on Christmas Eve — and providing the bells to do so. Another of their holiday initiatives is a house decorating contest.

Any resident who has decked out their house for the holidays is invited to enter, with prizes to be awarded in the following categories:
- Best Inflatable Display
- Best Townhouse/Condo/Apartment Display
- Best Classic Display
- Most Extreme Display (a.k.a., Clark Griswold Award)
- Town Choice Award, which is voted on by residents
All the entries are now in and the township has posted a map on its website showing where the contestants’ houses are. Last night everybody in our household took a tour around town to look at some of the four-dozen entries.
The one at the top of this post is the first house we saw. The big, lighted Christmas packages are a nice touch. I hadn’t seen that before.
Many of the entries were characterized by what I can only call exuberance.

Others were quite restrained. This one is truly old-school, with no Christmas lights at all.

Most of the entries featured lots of multicolored lights, but on some the lights were all white.

Minions played a role in a surprising number of displays.

I assume the folks at this house were angling for the Best Inflatable Display award. (That’s an outhouse that Santa is peeking out of on the lower right. Every thirty seconds or so he would open the door and look out like this, then retreat back inside and close the door.)

But the most rollicking display we saw — our pick for the Clark Griswold award — was this one, which made me think of a scene from the Pixar movie, Coco.
