That’s what a Democratic friend of mine wrote in an email exchange about tomorrow’s election. Many of us who believe that the future of our country is on the ballot this year tend to feel that way.
And it’s not just Democrats. What’s interesting to progressives like me is that many Trump supporters are equally convinced that the soul of the nation is at stake tomorrow. They are as convinced that Biden is a closet socialist who would usher in policies that doom the economy as I am that Trump is a would-be autocrat who poses an existential threat to our democracy. Never have the stakes seemed so high for so many voters, as witnessed by the unprecedented number of votes that have already been cast.
Like many people, I’ll be tuning in tomorrow night to learn what the returns look like in Florida and North Carolina, which I understand are among the states that are likely to report results relatively early, possibly on election night. I pray that Biden has already clinched an Electoral College majority by Wednesday morning so that Trump has little incentive to try to quash the counting of whatever votes have not been tallied by then.
I’m not a nail-biter, but that doesn’t mean I’m not nervous.
